Since the 16th century, the Moluccas have been called the islands of spices because of the abundance of clove and nutmeg, which only grew at this location. The colonial trade of spices resulted in great wealth for Portugal and the Netherlands. The visits from these countries were mostly due to the abundance of spices found here.

The clove occurs from flower buds, which grow in bunches on the green tropical tree - the Eugenia Aromatica.
